Home support workers are vulnerable because many of them are foreign-born, because they are often poorly paid, and because they work in private homes.

Rachel Barken PhD (right) is an Ontario Women's Health Scholars Postdoctoral Fellow in the Department of Sociology at York University. Her research and teaching interests include aging, health, gender, and disability. She has published in journals including Aging & Society, Sociology Compass, Qualitative Health Research, and Journal of Contemporary Ethnography. Joanie Sims-Gould PhD, RSW, (left) is an Associate Professor in the Department of Family Practice at the University of British Columbia and a Researcher with the Centre for Hip Health and Mobility. Her research interests include home care, the intersection of health care and family care, aging in place and the built environment, and knowledge translation.
